‘VAT exemption’ refers to the government tax relief scheme that allows people with a disability or long-term medical condition to pay for an emergency alarm call system without paying VAT.

You could claim VAT exemption on a Telecare24 plan if you’re chronically sick or disabled. You do not need to be registered disabled or eligible for any other benefit to qualify.

What HMRC means by ‘chronically sick or disabled’

For VAT purposes, you’re chronically sick or disabled if you have:

• a physical or mental impairment that has a long-term and substantial adverse effect on your ability to carry out everyday activities
• a condition that the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness (that’s a long-term health condition)

If you’re not sure if your condition means you’re chronically sick or disabled, you may wish to consult your doctor or other medical adviser.

Examples include, but are not limited to:

• For VAT purposes, those who are only temporarily disabled or incapacitated, for instance with a broken bone, do not qualify for the term ‘chronically sick or disabled’.
• Also, age alone does not qualify a person for VAT exemption. In other words, VAT exemption is not automatically granted to someone who is ‘elderly’.
