Dr Hilary Jones MBE is a GP, presenter, and writer. You will know Dr Hilary as a regular contributor on ITV’s Good Morning Britain. He is also a Telecare24 Ambassador and guest blogger.

More about Dr Hilary Jones

Dr Hilary qualified in 1976 at The Royal Free Hospital in London having studied art subjects at A Level then converting to a six year medical degree.
In 1979 he worked for a year as the single handed medical officer on Tristan da Cunha, the most isolated inhabited island in the world.
He became a Principal in General Practice and a GP Trainer in the early 1980’s.
In 1981 he worked as a troubleshooting GP and Emergency Doctor for the oil industry at Sullom Voe in Shetland for Offshore Medical Support.

He also worked as a Senior House Officer in Opthalmology before entering General Practice assisting in Glaucoma and Cataract extraction procedures and learning the science of refraction.
He then began presenting educational medical TV programmes for British Medical TV in 1986. Sky TV then adopted these programmes for their news bulletins soon after.
In 1989 Dr Hilary Jones joined the most successful TV breakfast station ever, TVAM.
He and Lorraine Kelly were the first presenters to be signed up by GMTV when it won the breakfast franchise in 1993. He is now the Health Editor for ITV’s Breakfast television.

A few words from Dr Hilary

If like me you have an elderly parent, it can be a real cause of concern knowing they spend a lot of time at home alone.

“I can honestly say that from the moment [my mum] had a careline alarm my worries lessened considerably.”

Before getting a Telecare24 alarm for my mum, I would often worry about what would happen if she needed help and I wasn’t nearby. I was particularly concerned if she suffered a fall and couldn’t move.

I can honestly say that from the moment she had a careline alarm my worries lessened considerably. Fortunately, my mum never needed to activate her pendant, but that’s not the point. I would get great comfort knowing that if she ever needed help and I wasn’t available, then Telecare24 would take care of everything for me and let me know straight away. Many people I speak to are often hesitant about getting an alarm as they feel they are in good health, they don’t want to be made to feel old and they have never had a situation where one may have been useful. Whilst I completely understand their sentiments, the experience I’ve had with my own mum suggests having a careline alarm is a really positive thing! It will help you stay independent, it will enable you to stay in your home for much longer and it will also give a measure of reassurance to your family. It may well be that you never have to use it, but just the fact that you have the Telecare24 care team at your disposal will give everyone real peace of mind.

I chose the fall alarm plan for my mum, as she was in her 90’s and statistics show that the older you are the more susceptible you are to falling. I especially like the fall detector because it automatically activated if my mum had a fall, even if she had hit her head and was unconscious. The Telecare24 team would then be able to get the help she needs and let me know at the same time. If I was uncontactable, they would contact one of my other family members.
